Synopsis & Interpretation:

For my multimodal presentation, I decided to interpret the work of Sebastião Salgado. As I am also Brazilian, I thought it would be an interesting photographer to evaluate. His powerful black-and-white images capture the human condition and the environment. The images I have chosen showcase some of the stark contrasts between nature and humans that make his work most renowned.

Salgado’s images serve as catalysts for social change, prompting awareness and action. Through his lens, Salgado immortalizes both the beauty and the hardships of our planet, leaving an indelible mark on photography and society. His distinct style is marked by stark contrast and intricate detail, and his work evokes empathy and contemplation. Through evaluating his images, I was able to think more critically and deeply about the relationship between humans and nature; and how Salgado’s methods of capturing these themes make us think about these subjects. The beauty in his images and what they evoke illustrate how powerful photography can be. His use of lighting and attention to detail in his subjects is something I will keep in mind when continuing in future photography projects.

Comment on Another Student's Blog:

My comment on Alexandra Bond's post: "I think you did a fantastic job at showcasing Greenfield's work. I thought the way you evaluated and interpreted the images using the photographic categories discussed in class made the presentation informative and easier to comprehend the artist's work. Greenfield's work feels very honest and real about a variety of subject matter that we as humans face. I would agree with you that her authenticity showcased in her photographs is admirable, and is something I would like to apply to my future photographic endeavors."
